From Mumias, Kenya, to the world’s biggest basketball stage — the WNBA — Madina Okot continues to write a remarkable chapter in Kenyan sport.

On Wednesday night in Brooklyn, H.E. President William Samoei Ruto, alongside First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto, was there to witness a young Kenyan competing on the WNBA stage. His presence sent a meaningful message of recognition and encouragement to Madina and to the many young Kenyan athletes dreaming of taking their talent to the world.

For Madina Okot, having Kenya’s President watching courtside in New York was more than a proud moment — it was a powerful source of inspiration.

A night to remember

  • Atlanta Dream 83–65 New York Liberty
  • Venue: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York
  • Madina Okot: Atlanta Dream #11
  • Match date: 23 September 2026

The WNBA lists Madina Okot as a 6-foot-6 center from Mumias, Kenya, selected 13th overall by the Atlanta Dream in the 2026 WNBA Draft. She completed her rookie regular season averaging 5.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game.

Beyond the numbers

A young Kenyan who only began playing basketball in 2020 has risen from the local game to the WNBA — creating a pathway and a powerful source of inspiration for the next generation of Kenyan girls and boys in sport.

As Madina herself reflected after the game, the support from home can help open opportunities for other girls.

This is what sport can do.

It can take talent from a local community to a global stage.

It can connect Kenya to the world.

It can create careers, inspire young people and open doors that extend far beyond the playing court.

At Sports Tourism Limited, we believe in the power of sport to create experiences, connect destinations and build opportunities.

Madina Okot’s journey is more than a basketball story. It is a Kenyan story.

Congratulations, Madina.

The journey continues. The world is watching.
