Forging the Sports Partnerships That Will Power Africa’s Next Sports Tourism Economy

As we prepare for World Tourism Day on 27 September, the Sports Tourism Limited (STL) team has been on the road — taking us through Nandi County, the Source of Champions; Eldoret, the City of Champions; and finally Iten, the Home of Champions.

This journey has been about more than places.

It has been about people, partnerships, technology, talent and the future of sports tourism in Africa.

Building the Infrastructure That Connects Sport With Tourism

At Iten, we met with our technology partners, SportTechies Innovations, as we continue working towards building Africa’s Digital Integrated Sports Tourism Infrastructure Platform — an ecosystem designed to bring together:

  • Travel
  • Ticketing
  • Sports Events
  • Sports Logistics
  • Destination Marketing
  • Business Networking
  • SaaS Solutions

Sport has become one of the world’s most powerful drivers of travel, destination branding and economic development. Yet the sports tourism ecosystem remains highly fragmented.

Our ambition is to help change that.

Together with SportTechies Innovations, we are working towards a technology platform that connects sport, tourism, travel, commerce, destinations and economic opportunity — creating the foundations for a more connected African sports tourism ecosystem.

Meeting the Champions

Our time in Iten also took us closer to the athletes who make Kenya’s sporting story globally recognised.

We interacted with World Champions and elite athletes, including Leonard Bett, the elite 3000m steeplechaser and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist.

Beyond the medals, we wanted to understand the journey:

What does it take to become a champion?

What environments create champions?

And how can technology, tourism and partnerships create more opportunities around that talent?

These conversations are an important part of the ecosystem we are building.

Discovering Iten’s Sports Tourism Ecosystem

We also explored some of the facilities and experiences that make Iten a unique destination for sports tourism:

  • Kechei Centre — accommodation, hospitality and a training environment where athletes can experience the same surroundings that have helped produce world-class performers.
  • Kiprun & 42 House — a running-focused environment built around athlete development, growth and discovery, inspired by the spirit of “KEEP RUNNING!”
  • Kerio View Hotel — offering spectacular views of the Kerio Valley and another important component of Iten’s hospitality offering.

We also met Run with Amos, a certified guide and running coach promoting active tourism in Iten — creating opportunities for visitors to experience the destination through running and follow in the footsteps of some of Kenya’s greatest athletes.

From Champions to Destinations

This is exactly what Sports Tourism Limited believes in.

A champion is not only an athlete.

A champion can become a destination story.

A training camp can become a tourism experience.

An event can create business opportunities.

A destination can attract international teams and athletes.

And technology can connect all these elements into one ecosystem.

As we approach World Tourism Day, our message is clear:

Sport can take people to places.

Places can create experiences.

Experiences can create economic opportunities.

And technology can connect the entire ecosystem.

We are excited about what lies ahead with SportTechies Innovations and our growing network of partners, athletes, teams, destinations and sports stakeholders.

Another chapter of collaboration, innovation, service and impact is taking shape.

With Kenya set to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi, the journey from the champion-making landscapes of Nandi and Iten to the global stage of Nairobi presents a powerful opportunity to connect athlete development, sports tourism, training camps, destination experiences and technology into one world-class ecosystem.

We are building the infrastructure for Africa’s sports tourism future.
